The Philippines' production of paper, pulp and recovered paper totaled 997,211 tonnes, 94,605 tonnes and 65,160 tonnes respectively in 2007, maintaining the same level as 2006, according to a report from the Philippines Pulp and Paper Manufacturers' Association released at the FAPPI Conference, held in Manila last November.
The country consumed 978,248 tonnes of paper, 120,855 tonnes of pulp and 1.24 million tonnes of recovered paper in 2007, each up around 5% compared with 2006.
The country imported 141,940 tonnes of paper, 45,000 tonnes of pulp and 563,859 tonnes of recovered paper in 2007, maintaining the same level as 2006.
Meanwhile the country exported 160,000 tonnes of paper and 20,000 tonnes of pulp in 2007; these levels were flat on 2006 numbers.
The Philippines has 41 pulp mills, including 34 recovered paper based mills, one integrated plant and six abaca pulp mills, with a total capacity of 1.292 million tonnes/yr. The industry has 5,600 direct workers.
Within the paper sector, containerboard accounts for 55% of the total mill capacity at 699,000 tonnnes, newsprint 21 %, printing and writing paper 21 % and tissue comprises 3%. The country has 16 containerboard mills and 12 mills in the graphic papersector.
