Thurso, QC, pulp mill restart will restore large pulpwood, biomass demand
LOST RIVER, WV, May 12, 2010 (RISI) - The impending restart of the former Fraser Papers pulp mill in Thurso, QC, will return pulpwood demand to local markets. The facility consumed about 1 million m3 at capacity prior to closing last year.
New owner Fortress Paper will resume pulp production at the Thurso in early June and make pulp for the open market, industry contacts told RISI. The firm, which expects to have saleable pulp by mid-month, will target the US and export markets.

Thurso's northern bleached hardwood kraft pulp sales will continue for a 16-month run while the firm embarks on a C$153 million project that will convert the mill's output to dissolving pulp and to build a biomass-fed 25 MW cogeneration plant.
Fraser shuttered the facility last May during the tail end of a downturn in global pulp markets. The company later filed for bankruptcy protection. Fortress Paper has moved fast since completing its acquisition of the Thurso pulp mill on April 30.
Last week Fortress Paper announced it had signed a 15-year energy supply agreement with Hydro Quebec in which it will sell 18.8 MW of green power with the cogeneration plant's completion, with deliveries to begin in the fourth quarter of 2012.
